Jourdanton Community Library's Salad Luncheon
Our Friends of the library have been doing a Salad Luncheon for over 20 years. It is always a big success. People are always asking when we are going to do another luncheon. We put a sign up sheet in the library and ask our patrons and friends to donate a salad or two or three! We call our Friends group also. We keep track of the number of salads and different types of salads so that we know we have a good variety.
Cost & How Many Served: We spent approximately $200 (which was actually covered by donations.) We served 275 people and cleared $1,648. We charge $6.00 per plate for all you can eat.
Production time: We work on this for about 3-4 weeks, getting the donations lined up, doing publicity, setting up the hall, serving and cleaning up, etc.
Volunteers: You will need about 10-15 workers the day of the lunch to set up the food, keep the salads replenished, take money, clean up, etc.
Place to hold the event: You will need a place that will seat approximately 100-150 people, if you serve from 11 am- 12 pm. People will come and go and lots of people will get their plates to go. You will need a place with a big refrigerator to keep the salads cold, or lots of ice chests. Church halls are good places if you don't have a community center that you can use.
Materials needed: Tons os salads, plates (regular and to go), forks, cups, napkins, crackers, serving utensils, tea, and ice.
Donations: We ask stores for contributions such as turkeys for turkey salad, gifty certificates, plates, etc.
Publicity: We write articles for the local newspaper and local radio station. We also make up posters which we put out in businesses throughout the county. We call some of the offices at the County Courhouse and Dept. of Human Resources, Attorney General Office, county Jail, itc. as a reminder. The Jourdanton State Bank always puts the luncheon on their marquee.
